A new documentary about late singer Whitney Houston alleges that her cousin, Dee Dee Warwick, sexually abused her.

The doc is an "intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston " s life.

"There were times when I looked up to God and I'd go, 'Why is this happening to me?' People think it's so easy and it's not".

The film will also highlight Houston's relationship with her mother who was admittedly tough on her superstar daughter. "A predator is a predator is a predator.' If Cissy had known, she would have done something about it, because Cissy loves her children'".

Gary Houston, Whitney's half-brother, also said he was sexually abused between the age of seven and nine by a female family member, in the documentary.

Whitney passed away on February 11, 2012, while Dee Dee died on October 18, 2008.

MacDonald admitted: 'I interviewed Pat Houston and Gary Houston, who's Whitney's brother.

Whitney debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in a midnight screening on Wednesday and the first official USA trailer just hit the web.

Macdonald tried to reach out to Houston's family initially about the possibility that she had been abused after watching old footage of the late singer.

"She decided this was the elephant in the room that nobody wanted to talk about, this was the thing that to her - she had a sister who had been abused in her childhood, and she felt so strongly that this was the thing that was the catalyst of so many things in Whitney's life", Macdonald said. "She felt uncomfortable in her own skin in nearly every interview there was with her", he told Deadline. She seemed kind of asexual in a odd way. "She's this handsome woman but she's very closed in her demeanor".

Whitney explores other aspects of her sexuality as well, including her alleged affair with longtime friend Robyn Crawford.

"Whitney" is set to hit theaters on July 6.
