The 143rd Preakness Stakes

The 143rd Preakness Stakes takes place on Saturday, with Kentucky Derby victor Justify out to clinch the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

Favorites often win the Preakness and longshots rarely do.

For bettors looking for omens, that was also Justify's post position in the 20-horse Kentucky Derby.

At last year's Preakness, he was all over Cloud Computing, who won as an upset favorite.

The Derby victor arrived in Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon after a flight from Kentucky, where he had been based since his victory on May 5.

The race covers 1 3/16 miles, a 16th of a mile less that the Kentucky Derby.

If all eight start, the field will equal the smallest in the Preakness since 2000. The last time there were fewer than eight runners in the Preakness was 1986, when Snow Chief, that year's Derby favorite, defeated Derby victor Ferdinand.

Baffert, victor of the Triple Crown in 2015 with American Pharoah, won the Derby for the fifth time with Justify.

Baffert has a flawless record when taking Kentucky Derby winners to Preakness, and Justify may come up against similar conditions to those he experienced at Churchill Downs. He seems to have worked his way through it just fine. It also ran third-place Audible in the Derby, and although Justify is a potential Triple Crown victor, WinStar, China Horse Club and SF Bloodstock will challenge him Saturday with Quip.

Quip is the new shooter best positioned to give Justify a run after winning the Tampa Bay Derby. Twenty-three others have won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness but failed to close the deal in the Belmont - most recently California Chrome in 2014.

Bravazo will be the horse to Justify's outside in the starting gate. So $10 on a horse at 12-to-1 nets you $120.

What Walden didn't say at that moment, but what he and Baffert believe, is that if Justify runs his race Saturday, nothing else will matter.

The race for the Triple Crown returns this weekend with the 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes.

Baffert said he didn't mind any added pressure of bringing the Derby victor to the Preakness with a Triple Crown still on the horizon. Overall, Preakness favorites are 72-for-142 in the second leg of the Triple Crown, and Justify is the overwhelming favorite Saturday at Pimlico. Derby runner-up Good Magic is the 3-1 second choice. The payouts are multiplied the more horses you put in these bets. "The last couple of days he's looked good".

Joe's answer: Brown is thrilled with the way Good Magic came out of the Derby, and he arrived in Baltimore early to prepare for the Preakness. With heavy overnight thunderstorms leaving the Pimlico main track a sloppy mess (more of this is unfortunately forecasted for the remainder of the week), the dark bay was out for only light exercise. Quip is trained by Rodolphe Brisset, a 34-year-old Frenchman who honed his skills as an assistant to two-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe victor Patrick Biancone and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.
