Several people were seriously injured in a school bus crash on a New Jersey highway on Thursday morning, the state police said.
Images taken at the scene and posted to social media show the bus on its side in the median with heavy damage to the front end.
The bus was from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, New Jersey, Police Chief Ken Ehrenberg said, according to WPVI-TV.
The school bus was on the median of Interstate 80 in Mount Olive and the front end of the bus appeared to be crushed or ripped off. Family members tell Eyewitness News the bus was headed to Waterloo Village as part of a field trip for fifth graders. The undercarriage, the bus wheels still attached, lays perpendicular to the overturned bus, stretching out over multiple lanes of the highway.
The school bus had markings for the Paramus School District.

"There's an incredible emergency response from throughout Morris County and by State Police. I can only describe it as horrific", Mount Olive Mayor Robert Greenbaum told CBS New York.
Police have said they are investigating a "serious" accident.
Authorities confirmed multiple injuries to NBC, but did not detail how many or whether they included children.
Gov. Murphy has also been briefed on the situation, and the National Transportation Safety Board says it is gathering information on the crash.
