Casey campaign manager M.E. Smith released a statement on Barletta's nomination saying the race will be a contest "between a candidate who fights for working families and a candidate who fights for the corporate interests that stack the deck against them".

Voters are also heading to the polls Tuesday in Idaho, Nebraska and Oregon.

Pennsylvania's thus-far sleepy U.S. Senate race this year could nonetheless play a key role in determining whether Republicans hang onto control of the chamber.

Barletta, 62, who rocketed to national prominence thanks to his battles against crime and illegal immigrants while mayor, also was an early and enthusiastic supporter of Donald Trump's bid for the White House, and has enjoyed President Trump's support.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Rick Saccone, who lost a special election two months ago to Democrat Conor Lamb for a congressional seat, has now lost a two-way Republican primary for a different U.S. House seat.

Barletta is endorsed by the state Republican Party and is a favorite of President Donald Trump, who Barletta endorsed in the 2016 presidential election even before Trump had won Pennsylvania's primary election. Trump was the first Republican to win Pennsylvania since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

With 51 of 75 Lawrence County precincts reporting, businessman Paul Mango holds a almost 500-vote lead over state senator Scott Wagner in the GOP governor primary. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., who beat four little-known challengers.
