Parents Of Stoneman Douglas Victims Announce Run For Broward County School Board

Instead, the parents were somber as they spoke of their sense of duty to make schools safer almost three months after a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School left their children dead.

Alhadeff is running for a seat in Broward County School District 4, while Petty is running in Broward County School District 8.

"Every parent in Broward County deserves to have their child come home to them safely", Petty told the Sun Sentinel in an interview Tuesday. Since the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that claimed the life of her daughter, Alhadeff has started a nonprofit organization called Make Schools Safe Inc.

Alhadeff and Petty said that if elected, they would work with the current Superintendent Robert Runcie to focus on the board's transparency and accountability. She said discipline policies must be "revamped" and to "meet somewhere in the middle".

"I do not want any other parent to go through the pain and anguish that I go through everyday", Alhadeff said. "I'm still not satisfied with the answers to the questions I asked back then".

Alhadeff will be going up against Abby Freedman, and Petty will be going up against Donna Korn.

Alhadeff is a former classroom teacher, according to the SunSentinel. Campaign officials for Alhadeff and Petty say that while the two are supporting each other's candidacy, they're not involved in other School Board races.
