5-year-old hospitalized after bear attack outside Colorado home

A doctor treating a 5-year-old Colorado girl attacked by a bear outside her home says she received dozens of internal and external stiches but is not suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Around 2:30 a.m., the little girl heard what she believed to be her dog "throwing a fit" and went outside to check on it.

The girl's mother heard a commotion, investigated, and discovered a large black bear dragging her daughter.

She told authorities that the bear dropped the girl after she yelled at it.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says officers are tracking the bear with the help of federal wildlife officers.

During the call to 911, both parents remained calm and the father described the injuries to the girl, saying she had been bitten on her leg and buttocks, and said she was not bleeding severely. Dr. Charles Breaux, Jr. "They're thankful that she wasn't injured worse than she was".

An autopsy has been conducted on the 127-pound two-year-old male bear that attacked Kimberly Cyr outside of her East Orchard Mesa home early Sunday morning

"The goal is to trap the bear, and if we do, we are going to put that bear down", Porras said. The bear approached her, and as she was going back into the home, the bear grabbed her and "ripped from the door", deputies said.

Wildlife officials said they observed the bear walking up to a residence about a half-mile away from the location of the attack early Monday. Officers killed the bear before it entered the trap.

On Monday, one day after the attack, the department announced it had killed the bear suspected of attacking the girl.

After dealing with the bear, they took the animal's carcass to the Wildlife Health Laboratory in Fort Collins for a necropsy, the paper reported.

Colorado has an estimated 17,000 to 20,000 bears, a population that's considered robust in a state of 5.7 million people that also attracts many tourists. This marks the first in recent memory in the Grand Valley where bears are rarely spotted.
