Kia hasn't released any specs yet, but says that the 48V battery will be located beneath the boot floor, at least in the case of the Sportage. The battery will link into the vehicle's power system allowing a significant reduction in the size of the 12-volt starter battery and the starter motor, which will normally only be required for cold starts at low temperatures. The company claims thats integrating the EcoDynamics+ mild-hybrid system into the existing architecture "is relatively straightforward". It means the engine can switch off earlier and for longer, even while the vehicle is moving, and lean on a 13bhp power boost from the motor while accelerating, both of which reduce fuel consumption.
Kia says that its mild-hybrid technology can provide extra acceleration for overtaking, as well as reducing engine load when the vehicle is being driven more gently.
The MHSG is mounted in the engine bay and connected to the crankshaft by a belt. In "motor" mode, under acceleration, it uses battery charge to add torque to the engine to aid acceleration. When coasting, or braking, it switches to "generator" mode to recharge the battery.

It also comes ahead of the merger of its struggling Indian business with Idea Cellular, a deal that is expected to close in June. He added he would be working flat out until his departure in October, but that he had no plans after that.
The mild hybrid will be affiliated with both manual and automatic transmissions and will work as described on all types of transmissions: front, rear and all-wheel drive.
Expect to hear more details soon on the Sportage's use of the EcoDynamics+ powertrain, as well as United Kingdom pricing and specifications.
The powertrain is part of the South Korean firm's ongoing electrification strategy that will see 16 "advanced powertrain" vehicles introduced to its line-up - comprising five hybrids, five plug-in hybrids, five all-electric and one powered by fuel cell.
