Elon Musk Says Tesla Model S Crash Media Coverage Is 'Messed Up'

On Twitter, co-founder Elon Musk said it was "super messed up" that the incident was garnering public attention, while thousands of accidents involving traditional automobiles "get nearly no coverage".

Tesla will "continue to hire rapidly in critical hourly and salaried positions to support the Model 3 production ramp and future product development", according to the memo.

A Tesla spokesperson did not comment following the disclosure about the use of the feature.

Meanwhile, Musk told employees Monday that the company plans to "flatten" its structure while working to improve communication and trim actions "that are not vital" to the company's success.

Musk said "the probability of an accident with autopilot is just less", and he insisted the vehicle had functioned exactly as it was created to in the California crash. But there's been a growing push by short-sellers and some traditional supporters have begun asking more troubling questions - many now expecting Tesla to have to raise new capital despite Musk's claim that it has enough cash in hand to get through 2018 without a new stock offering. Police Sgt. Samuel Winkler said the car's air bags were activated and that the Tesla's 28-year-old driver suffered a broken right ankle, while the driver of the mechanic truck didn't require treatment. "An impact at that speed usually results in severe injury or death", he tweeted. Two teens were later killed, a third injured, in a Florida crash in which their Model S sedan's battery pack caught fire after a crash. In March, a Tesla Model X SUV crashed on a California highway, killing the driver, and investigators are looking into the performance of the semi-autonomous driving system in that crash.

The investigation into the crash in Utah is ongoing, police said. The NTSB previously criticized Autopilot for playing a role in a fatal, 2016 crash.

Additionally, the NTSB is also looking into a 2016 accident in which the driver of a Tesla slammed into a tractor trailer and died. The agency and Tesla have both stated that they do not believe the accident was caused by the car's autopilot feature.

The South African-born executive again took to Twitter in response to coverage of the Utah crash.

"It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the ~40,000 people who died in USA auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage", he said in a tweet. Accidents that a year ago resulted in 40,000 USA deaths, he added "get nearly no coverage".
