Nine states, including NY and Pennsylvania, have been affected by a massive egg recall that has led to a salmonella outbreak and sickened 35 people.

Salmonella from eggs has sickened almost three dozen people, 11 of them requiring hospitalization, as an outbreak continues to spread since a multi-state recall of more than 200 million eggs in April. The FDA says that they were sold under Walmart, Publix, and Food Lion's store brands, plus a variety of brand names (Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Glenview, Nelms, Sunshine Farms, Sunups), and also turned up in a few restaurant chains like Waffle House. Recalled eggs were also sold to restaurants.

The Indianapolis Star reported the egg recall is one of the largest to occur since 2010, when 500 million eggs were recalled from an Iowa producer amid almost 2,000 reported illnesses linked to salmonella. FDA investigators then inspected the farm and collected samples for testing.

Check egg cartons for the following numbers: P-1065 (the plant number) and another set of numbers between 011 and 102 (the Julian date), or, for Publix and Sunups egg cartons, plant number P-1359D and Julian date 048A or 049A with Best By dates of April 02 and April 03.

The bacteria in question is called salmonella braenderup, "which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems", the government agency reports.

A salmonella outbreak that led to the recall of 207 million eggs has worsened - with 35 people reported ill in several states, federal health officials said. These eggs were repackaged and sold under multiple brand names, including Publix and Sunups.

The FDA has of course posted the full list of recalled products and warns that, if it turns out you still have one of the possibly unsafe cartons, you should chuck them in the trash or return them for a refund.
