Microsoft has been trying to make its Windows 10 operating system lighter for less-powerful PCs for some time.
According to a tweet posted earlier, in what is claimed to be an internal memo from a Chinese retail vendor, it shows that the Windows 10 April Update will start rolling out on May 9, which falls on a Wednesday in mainland China. In total there are over 50,000 files that have been stripped out of Windows 10 Pro for the Lean release, and they include some pretty hefty programs including Internet Explorer, Mail, Windows Media Player and PowerShell.

To be clear, Microsoft said that the Yammer and Skype for Business Windows Phone apps may continue to work after May 20, though Microsoft Teams won't and will display error messages when Office 365 users try to connect. Its initial offering, Windows 10 S, didn't go over well due to the lack of support for apps not installed via the Microsoft Store.
The lack of a formal announcement from Microsoft makes us think this is meant to be a niche product for specialist users, but it's an interesting development from a company that recently de-prioritised its flagship operating system in favour of its cloud and AI efforts.
