STUCK IN SYRIA: Trump's Syria Policy Is A Dangerous, Ambiguous MESS

Amid a fierce war of words between Russian Federation and the U.S. and its allies, Moscow has said that a team of chemical experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will inspect the site of a suspected poison gas attack in Syria on Wednesday.

Here is the information the Western countries say they have about the suspected Syrian poison gas assault on Douma.

Instead, Syrian authorities offered them 22 people to interview as witnesses, he said, adding that he hoped "all necessary arrangements will be made ... to allow the team to deploy to Douma as soon as possible".

President Donald Trump on Sunday said a US -led missile attack on Syria's chemical weapons program was "perfectly carried out".

After a weekend of global anxiety following Western led-airstrikes in Syria on Saturday, the dust seems to have settled and it appears that, at least for now, the dreaded scenario of a military standoff between the West and Russian Federation in the Middle East will not happen.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned against demonising Russia and said the air strikes raised the risk of a direct confrontation between U.S. and Russian forces in Syria for the first time. He told reporters in Moscow that the inspectors could not go to the site because they need permission from the U.N. Department for Safety and Security. Asked about reports of the missile attack, an Israeli military spokesman said: "We don't comment on such reports".

But the joint UN-OPCW mechanism ended in November 2017 after Russian Federation repeatedly blocked attempts at renewing it.

He says the Russian air defense assets in Syria monitored the strike but didn't engage any of the missiles. On Monday, they highlighted their military gains, as Syrian forces drove through Douma.

The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, the United States and European Union said in a joint statement early Tuesday that they condemn the April 7 chemical attack in eastern Ghouta in Syria.

A statement by the director-general of the OPCW on Monday said that Syrian and Russian officials who "participated in the preparatory meetings in Damascus have informed the FFM [Fact-Finding Mission] that there were still pending security issues to be worked out before any deployment could take place". He said government officials met with the delegation, which has been in Damascus for three days, a number of times to discuss cooperation.

France urged OPCW nations to boost the organisation's work so it can completely dismantle Syria's "secret" toxic weapons programme. It is widely believed that the Syrian government was behind the attack, which left more than 40 people dead.

The OPCW team dispatched to Syria to investigate does not have a mandate to assign blame.

Sites near Damascus and Homs were hit on Saturday by the US, French and United Kingdom in response to the alleged chemical attack on Douma on 7 April.

The missiles struck three chemical weapons facilities.

"If you look at what Russian Federation is doing, they continue to be involved with all the wrong actors, whether their involvement in Ukraine, whether you look at how they are supporting Venezuela, whether you look in Syria and their way of propping up Assad and working with Iran, that continues to be a problem", Haley said on Fox News Sunday. Speaking on French television BFM and online site Mediapart, Macron stressed that the French diplomacy is able to talk with Iran, Russia and Turkey on one side and to the United States on the other side.
