Chebukati announces way forward after 3 IEBC commissioners resigned

Three Kenyan commissioners on Monday announced their resignation, deepening a crisis at the country's electoral commission after a botched presidential election past year.

Magaya claimed that the three commissioners who resigned on Tuesday; Consolata Maina, Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat were part of a Ruto wing at the commission that was acting on the DP's instructions.

"For far too long and many times, the commission chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and gives direction when needed".

"Instead, under his leadership, the commission boardroom has become a venue for peddling misinformation that brewed mistrust, became a space for scrambling for and chasing individual glory and merit", Mwachanya said.

He further alleged that Ruto wanted suspended IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba back at the commission's helm by all means.

"The institution has continued to be dysfunctional, with arbitrary decision-making, leaking of internal documents and pursuing of personal interests", the three officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said in a statement they released at a news conference in Nairobi.

While it is not clear why Ruto is defending Chiloba, the source says his short experience will enable him "deal with crooks" who may want to tamper with his victory. Given this severe deterioration of confidence in the chair, we find our position as commissioners under his leadership no longer tenable.

"Therefore the events related to the purported vote have already shaken our already feeble confidence in the chair".
