Bryce Harper shatters bat, powers Nationals past Mets

Like all of America, I was outraged to learn Bryce Harper's hilarious double-hairdryer video was nothing but a stunt to push haircare products. On Monday night he hit his MLB-leading eighth home run of the season, despite breaking his bat. Wilmer Difo tied it with a two-out, two-run single off Jeurys Familia, and Michael A. Taylor drew a bases-loaded walk from the NY closer for a 7-6 lead.

The lumber split just above his hands, and the barrel helicoptered into the high, protective netting behind home plate on the first base side. The five-time All-Star trotted most of the way to first holding the few inches of the handle that remained after tagging a 95 miles per hour fastball from Jacob deGrom. All that was left was the handle. On his way back to the dugout, Harper playfully pulled up his sleeve to show his biceps.

Well, the Mets' outfield was tracking the ball down - all the way to right-center and over the wall for a solo home run that traveled over 400 feet.

In San Diego, Yasmani Grandal hit a grand slam, Matt Kemp belted a three-run homer and Ryu Hyun-jin struck out nine in six strong innings for Los Angeles.

Harper's bat broke on contact. The game is now in the top of the second. The late comeback by the Washington Nationals?

The Nats (7-9) are looking to make up ground on the Mets, who are off to a red-hot 13-2 start.
