Binghamton freshman found fatally stabbed in campus residence

Joao Souza, a 19-year-old freshman engineering student at Binghamton University, has died after being stabbed on campus on the night of Sunday, April 15.

Joao Souza, who graduated from Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook, was identified as the victim. In a statement, BU spokesman Ryan Yarosh said that the stabbing does not appear to be a random act. He's described as a "light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and dark hoodie".

Police did not elaborate early Monday evening where the suspect was found or his name, but said he was a Binghamton Unviersity student.

Investigators from multiple agencies have been interviewing numerous people throughout the night.

An "Active Alert" was issued overnight for a reported stabbing on Binghamton University's campus, according to the college's website.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the stabbing or the suspect's whereabouts to contact Binghamton University Police at 607-777-2393. Haley Anderson, 22, was a nursing student who was strangled to death at an off-campus residence on March 9, Pix11 News reported.

The crisis team at the Middle/High School has convened and a plan is in place to provide counseling to students and staff who may be in need.

"For the second time this semester we've struggled to absorb the news that one of our students has been killed", Rose said.

The Broome County district attorney's office is now now seeking to possess this suspect came back from Nicaragua to stand test.
