Since the USA and its allies attacked Syria Friday in response to alleged chemical weapons attacks on its own people, there has been a significant surge in Russian trolls promoting fake news, the Pentagon announced Saturday.

The operation was "precise, overwhelming and effective", McKenzie said, adding it will set their chemical weapons programme back "for years".

The meeting came a day after USA -led strikes, launched together with Britain and France, hit three Syrian chemical weapons facilities.

The strikes came in response to a suspected chemical weapon attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma last weekend that left dozens dead.

Russian Federation circulated a draft resolution calling for condemnation of the military action, but Britain's ambassador said the strikes were "both right and legal" to alleviate humanitarian suffering in Syria.

After the vote, Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the meeting confirmed that the US and its allies "continue to put global politics and diplomacy in the realm of myth-making - myths invented in London, Paris and Washington".

A USA strike previous year when 59 missiles were fired in response to the use of poison gas on civilians failed to deter him.

President Bashar al-Assad has been in power in Syria since 2000.

Russian Federation said that the Western powers "cynically" carried out military action hours before a team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was set to begin an investigation into the suspected chemical weapons attack in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta that sparked the intervention by the United States and its allies.
