Dortmund's Batshuayi may miss rest of season due to ankle injury

"Well its not good news for now, my season is probably over, and I wont be able to pay @BVB back for their confidence", wrote Batshuayi in a social media post.

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that an untimely injury has ended Michy Batshuayi's season, but he remains in contention for World Cup duty.

The Belgian striker, on loan from Chelsea, injured his ankle against Schalke on the weekend.

Batshuayi injured his left ankle late in Dortmund's 2-0 defeat at Schalke on Sunday and left the stadium in Gelsenkirchen on crutches.

"Participation with the Belgian national team at the World Cup in Russian Federation remains in the realms of possibility".

The Chelsea loanee has been a revelation at Dortmund since his arrival in January, scoring seven goals in only 10 league games.

"Thank you all for the wonderful amount of love I received since yesterday".

For Belgium, who are in England's World Cup group, Batshuayi appeared in half of his side's qualifiers.

Belgium still have Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertenes, two very different but equally excellent strikers to play as the centre forward in Russian Federation this summer, but Batshuayi would have been a shoo-in to be selected by Roberto Martínez before this injury. Wishing my teammates the best for the final days.

Batshuayi's injury is a blow to Dortmund's Champions League qualification hopes, with Peter Stoger's men fourth in the table, four points clear of RB Leipzig with six matches remaining.
