UCL Review: Real Madrid stuns Juventus in 93rd minute

Real Madrid survived a Champions League scare last night, edging Juventus 4-3 on aggregate after two stunning games of football.

But English referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot in the 93rd minute after Mehdi Benatia prevented Lucas Vazquez from executing a close-range finish with a clumsy challenge from behind.

Oliver sent off Buffon for his protests, meaning the goalkeeping great could only watch on as Cristiano Ronaldo slammed the decisive penalty past substitute Wojciech Szczesny.

Buffon had announced in October that this would be his last Champions League campaign unless his side won the final, after which he had meant to play in the Club World Cup. As the match was inching towards extra-time, Benatia's foul on Lucas Vazquez earned Real a penalty which was effectively turned into a deciding goal by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Juventus went up in less than 80 seconds through Mandzukic and scored another header in the 37th minute.

"It was a match in which we suffered", Ronaldo said.

Here are the four things Real Madrid got wrong against Juventus.

Diario Gol say players of the Catalan giants were wowed by the way Real refused to throw in the towel. "What happened at the end of the game won't change or take anything away from what he has done in the game", Zidane told his press conference after the tie in Madrid.

But Ronaldo, in his 150th Champions League appearance, then netted his 120th goal in the competition by converting the penalty with a firm shot into the top corner.

German champions Bayern went through on a 2-1 aggregate after their first-leg victory in Spain last week for their sixth semi-final in the last seven years.

The Reds have reached the semi-finals for the first time in 10 years and will be hoping to add a sixth main European title to their trophy cabinet.

"Since I've been here there's always been a bad performance in this competition and I always believed we would come through", Carvajal said. If they didn't provoke the penalty, it would've been a goal.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos Is Facing a ban in the first leg of the semi-finals after an altercation with Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri.

" Everyone has their own opinion on whether it was a penalty or not, I'm not going to discuss that, but I'm angry that people are talking of a robbery."
"That said, over the course of the two legs, I think both teams deserved to go through".
