Mr Comey, who stands at a tall 6ft8, describes his first impressions of President Trump. With each Stephanopoulos question, they cut back to Comey and the drama builds as we want to know what Comey's responses are going to be.

They are certainly better written than Comey's certain bestseller, if excerpts like these are any indication: "His face appeared slightly orange with bright white half-moons under his eyes where I assumed he placed small tanning goggles, and impressively coifed, bright blond hair, which upon close inspection looked to be all his".

The RNC effort was launched in advance of a media blitz by Comey that began on Friday morning (Saturday NZT) as ABC News aired segments of a longer interview scheduled for Sunday night (Monday NZT).

- Comey writes that Trump said he was thinking about asking the FBI to investigate the allegation to prove it was a lie. Comey advised the president against pursuing an investigation because he said it would make it appear that Trump was being personally investigated and because it is very hard to prove something didn't happen. Comey expressed concern about creating a narrative that the president was being investigated personally and that it was hard to prove something never happened.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump himself had a few unflattering remarks to make about Comey on Twitter. "It was my great honor to fire James Comey!".

"As far as I know, " Ryan replied. The Democratic argument is that Comey's conduct toward Clinton was wrong - their argument is still the same on this front - and that Comey's current testimony about Trump's conduct has legitimate revelatory value. The book also includes strikingly personal jabs at Trump that appear created to irritate the president.

"And I have every confidence that Jim Comey accurately copied, collected, recounted what exactly went on during those discussions", former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said. Comey writes that the president gave him flashbacks to his days prosecuting the Cosa Nostra. While Comey does not outline the details of the information - and says he didn't see indications of Lynch inappropriately influencing the investigation - he says it anxious him that the material could be used to attack the integrity of the probe and the FBI's independence.
