Barbara Bush's health is failing


Barbara Bush, the wife of former US President George HW Bush, is in "failing health" and has made a decision to no longer seek medical treatment, the office of the ex-president says in a statement.

Bush's office released a statement, confirming after a "recent series of hospitalizations", she has decided against seeking additional medical help and will instead focus on "comfort care".

"Barbara and I are so sorry we can't be there for your Inauguration on January 20th", Bush wrote at the time.

The spokesman said Bush is "surrounded by a family she adores" and appreciates the messages and prayers she's received.

Bush, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, has a form of Parkinson's disease and uses a motorized scooter or a wheelchair for mobility.

Bush, 92, is battling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and congestive heart failure and has been hospitalized several times over the a year ago.

He did not elaborate as to the nature of Mrs Bush's health problems. He also served as a congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and Ronald Reagan's vice president. She married at age 19 while George Bush was a young naval aviator.

Barbara Pierce Bush was born in Rye, New York.

She has dedicated her life post-White House life to the cause of literacy, and she and her husband have raised more than a billion dollars for charity since they left office.
