Volkov shook off the first two attempts but was taken down midway through the round. Volkov steps in a connects with a punch. After a slow start to round two, Volkov began to dare Werdum to come at him, and Werdum agreed with a flurry of punches and clinched him to the cage.

Fabricio Werdum is one of the greatest heavyweight of all time, and looked to further secure his legacy and close in on another title shot with a win on Saturday. However, even in this position, Volkov did not hesitate to fight back, using his much longer arms to his advantage. Volkov caught another kick and took Werdum down, but he did not follow him and let Werdum back to his feet. Werdum bit down on his mouth piece, ducked his head and threw a combination.

The 40-year-old Brazilian was much more successful in the debut of the fight, taking down Volkov numerous times and striking him with the very risky ground and pound. Volkov landed a counter right hand that sent Werdum crashing to the canvas. Werdum is looking exhausted now and Volkov sees it. Volkov was familiar with Werdum and formulated a successful game plan. "Our plan worked. Defend, defend, defend, and then attack".
