Ford is recalling over 1 million midsize vehicles in the US because of steering wheel issues. The recall involves 2014 to 2018 model year Fusions and MKZs in North America, with a total of 1,301,986 cars in the USA, 62,479 in Canada, and 14,172 in Mexico affected.
Ford said it knows of at least two accidents and one injury caused by the steering wheel detaching.
"Ford said the recall involves approximately 1,301,986 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, with an additional 62,479 in Canada and 14,172 in Mexico". The issue has to do with a bolt coming loose over time and possibly disconnecting the steering wheel.
In the cars being recalled, the steering wheel "may not maintain torque, allowing the bolt to loosen over time", Ford said.
The Fix: Dealers will remove the old steering wheel bolt and replace it with a new one. The affected vehicles were built in Ford's Flat Rock, Michigan, and Hermosillo, Mexico, assembly plants between July of 2013 and March of 2018. As a result, the steering wheel may detach.
