Trump pushes for new 'space force'

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants the USA military to create a new "space force", adding to the Pentagon's current ground, navy and air forces.

He said some people may argue that a space force would "compromise the sanctity of considering space to be off limits from warfare".

On a day filled with White House staffing shake-ups, the president remained mostly on-script in his 25-minute remarks, commenting on the positive developments with North Korea and the potential for expanding the U.S. Space program. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard?

The proposed Space Corps would have fallen under the Air Force branch. "So think of that: Space Force, because we are spending a lot and we have a lot of private money coming in, tremendous". He dubbed this theoretical new branch the "Space Force", noting that such a new agency could become reality soon.

"And you know, we have General Kelly here - four star and he's doing a great job in Washington", he said, pausing for applause.

After Trump renewed the "space force" proposal, Twitter completely roasted him.

"At a time when we are trying to integrate the department's joint warfighting functions, I do not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations", Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Congressman Michael Turner in a letter last July.
