India will be tuberculosis free by 2025: PM Modi

PM Modi speaking on the sidelines of an event called End-TB Summit said, "A target has been set to eradicate Tuberculosis globally by 2030".

"It is nearly a Herculean task to eliminate TB by 2025 going by the current scenario".

The National Strategic Plan to eradicate TB by 2025 is operational and the government was constantly increasing the budget for the schemes to counter the disease, he said. The PM's announcement today makes the advanced target for TB elimination official.

"WHO will stand by India, and by every country that decides TB has no place in its future", he said.

He further said that front-line TB physicians and workers can make a major contribution in this direction.

"The government also needs to quickly roll out daily fixed-dose regimen under directly observed short course treatment throughout the country and introduce new diagnostic technology and newer anti-TB drugs". In contrast, India's current healthcare spending is barely 1.4% of the GDP. In addition, the ambitious expansion of resources planned under the NSP, 2012-2017, will have tripled the expenditure of the prior plan but has not been matched by allocations.
