YouTube dark mode starts hitting mobile, Android expected 'soon'


Our first hint of serious work towards a dark mode for YouTube landed last fall, when we saw signs of a dark theme for the app's video-playback panel.

We spotted YouTube making progress in that direction early this year, as settings for a dark mode started to include more and more of the app's UI elements. From there, you'll notice the background of the app darkens to a deep gray color. YouTube reportedly said Android users will be receiving the feature "soon" but did not specify an exact release date.

YouTube recently rolled out a Dark Mode to its website, and frankly, it's hot. The feature was heavily requested for mobile apps after the launch on desktop. "Dark theme", and letting you toggle it on right away.

YouTube explains right next to the desktop dark theme setting that it turns the light surfaces of the page dark, creating an experience ideal for night.

Dark mode has a few advantages.

A lot of people who aren't subscribed to a music streaming service like Google Play Music or Spotify like listening and discovering new tracks on YouTube.

The update is rolling out to iOS users today and should arrive soon for Android users. It's gentler on the eyes, which could encourage users to spend more time on YouTube's mobile app and possibly let them sleep easier.
