Major League Baseball rumors: Yankees sign Neil Walker

Walker agreed to a contract with the Yankees on Monday, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports. He has been competing with Tyler Wade and Ronald Torreyes for the open spot at second base.

The deal, which is reported to be for one year and worth about $5 million, is pending a physical.

Back injuries robbed him of a consistent, productive, and possibly long-term stint with the Mets as he was just one of many notable names sidelined due to health issues.

Walker recently told the New York Times that he had been close to signing with the Yankees, but the team's trade for Brandon Drury halted momentum. Second baseman Starlin Castro, an All-Star last season, was traded to Miami in the Giancarlo Stanton deal, third baseman Chase Headley was traded to San Diego in a salary dump and third baseman Todd Frazier became a free agent and signed with the Mets. His signing could signal the Yankees' intent to have touted prospects Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres begin the year in the Minor Leagues.

Walker, who is entering his 10th major league season, split the 2017 campaign with the Mets and Milwaukee Brewers, hitting a combined.265 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs in 111 games. It's going to be fun watching this intriguing mix of rookie and veteran talent jockey for spots on the Opening Day roster. However, those negotiations stalled after the Yankees' acquisition of Brandon Drury from the D-backs on February 20.A career.272 hitter with 130 home runs, Walker captured a Silver Slugger Award with the Pirates in 2014.
