REUTERS/Darren Ornitz Rescue crews are seen on East 34th Street/Midtown East Landing after a chartered Liberty Helicopters helicopter crashed into the East River in NY, U.S., March 11, 2018.

A Reuters photographer witnessed three people recovered by rescue divers being wheeled on stretchers onto a midtown pier shortly before 9 p.m. Officer McDaniel, 26, was an nearly two-year member of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department, and was assigned to Fire Station 36, on the C-shift. A possible phone number for him in Danbury, Connecticut, wasn't working.

Liberty Helicopters describes itself on its website as "the largest and most experienced helicopter sightseeing and charter service in New York City". The agency said it was investigating. But an August 2009 collision over the Hudson River between a Liberty chopper and a small private plane killed nine people, including a group of Italian tourists. Providing sightseeing trips since 1990, the company advertises "unparalleled safety records". Three subsequent maintenance violations in 2011 and 2012 didn't result in any fines.
