Google Might Rebrand Android Wear to 'Wear OS'


While the only reasonable explanation for the logo change is that Google wants deeper Assistant integration, we do believe the change to Wear OS is a move by Google to try and de-associate wearables with Android. Apple now leads the way in the wearables sector, ahead of Xiaomi, Fitbit and Garmin, all products and brands not using Android Wear. These devices are able to play music and access to other apps.

Apart from the new name and logo, little else is known about the new Wear OS at present.

For a while now, it has been possible to pair an Android smartwatch with an iOS device. They haven't disclosed any details regarding changing name, but the company must have wanted to remove the Android from the name of a device, as the device is not limited to Android only. The last stable version of software 12.2 allowed to receive nearby notifications.

It seems that this appears when setting up a watch using the Android P Developer preview build doing the rounds.

Some Reddit members speculate that it could also be "Watch OS" but if that's the case, there might be some confusion between this name and "watchOS" which is an Apple product.

The company has been testing out some new tweaks for its search bar in the latest Android version.

Retooling the Android Wear platform to Wear OS actually makes a lot of sense now, especially as it's not for Android-only compatibility devices anymore.
