Ford Mustang Adds California Special, Rev-Matching Six-Speed Manual


The new 2019 Mustang GT California Special is inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype, which was referred to as the original California Special.

The effortlessly-cool Bullitt Mustang isn't the only special-edition pony vehicle being unleashed by Ford Motor Company for 2019; today, the automaker announced that the Ford Mustang GT California Special is coming back, reviving a nameplate that's excited collectors and Mustang die-hards for fifty years. Ford says that rev-match tech will "ensure smoother and more spirited day-to-day-driving". The automaker also is reviving the special edition Mustang Bullitt this year. The interior has black Miko suede-trimmed seats with the GT/CS insignia and red contrasting stitching.

As far as engine performance is concerned, the CS gets the 5.0-liter V8 - packing up to 460 horsepower and 420 lb. -ft. of torque and topping out at 155 miles per hour - paired to a 6-speed manual transmission.

The new CS will feature the trademark fading racing stripe, a blacked-out open grille, five-spoke machine wheels, the splitter from the current Mustang Performance Pack 1 and black and red badges. To get the fancy 6-speed manual with rev-matching, you need to opt for the 6-speed and available Performance Package. It's like an automatic heel/toe downshift and, with the new exhaust, probably will sound awesome.

Power and torque remain the same 460 hp/420 lb-ft as the regular 2018 Ford Mustang GT. Also, this is the first Mustang to be equipped with a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The 2019 Ford Mustang - including Ford's brand-new addition to the GT/CS lineage - goes on sale this summer. It appeared on stage with a surviving dark Highland green.
