Main admin of Whatsapp group sharing child porn arrested

As part of the crackdown on the WhatsApp group, the agency carried out searches in five cities and arrested one accused person, Nikhil Verma, from his hometown Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh.

The agency has registered a case against members of the WhatsApp group for allegedly uploading and circulating child pornography videos.

Sources said the agency will now write to the authorities in the countries in which the Whatsapp group members are nationals seeking information about them.

The CBI officer further said that they will contact their counterparts in US, UK, Pakistan and Brazil to identify the group members. Administrators of the Whatsapp group were identified as Nikhil Verma, Satyendra Omprakash Chauhan, Nafees Raja, Zahid and Adarsh.

Details of investigations done by the CBI will also be shared with their counterparts in these countries. "At present they are busy investigating bank fraud cases involving (diamantaire) Nirav Modi and (Rotomac promoter) Vikram Kothari but despite that they took up this case", an Intelligence Bureau official said.

The group in question has 199 members and has been active for two years, the cops said.

According to the Information Technology Act, 2000, and Indian Penal Code, 1860, creation, transmission and even browsing child pornography is illegal in India.

The Supreme Court had also expressed concern over the issue a year ago and asked the central government to take proactive steps to prevent the menace.
