Aerial look at Ohio River floodwaters


National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in Marshall County located in north central in, until midnight Wednesday (EST).

In Greenup County, Kentucky, the Ohio River had yet to hit its peak as of Monday afternoon but was expected to crest at 56.9 feet between 10 p.m. Monday and 1 a.m. Tuesday, Kistner said. "That will bring us the next threat of moderate to heavy rainfall", he said.

He added that the Ohio River will likely crest higher than it did Monday during the next round of rain.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, the stage was 49 feet in Cincinnati; flood stage is 52 feet.

Marshall County Highway Department is advising of several roads that are marked with High Water or that are closed due to High Water.

At Brookport, the river was at 39.9 feet Monday.

Flood waters are on their way down with more precipitation expected throughout the week.

Vargo says cleaning and other supplies will be available for flood victims at the Madison School playground Monday morning at around 9:00. Flood stage is 39 feet. Flooding has also been occurring at Dave's Marine on Walnut Street and Scott Avenue in Belpre. Backwater flooding also begins in Brown County, especially along Eagle and Straight Creeks.

Overall, flooding of lowland and poor drainage areas should increase over the next week or so.

"That's just below major flood stage for that point", meteorologist Mike Kistner said.

The record flood on the Ohio River was in 1937, before the flood wall protection system was developed in Louisville.
