The Dark Knight in Anime: Batman Ninja!

It was a banner Wednesday this week for "Batman-Anime" fans as Warner Bros. released the English trailer for the forthcoming Batman Ninja animated film in all it's anime-style glory!

The film does feature and extensive English dub featuring names like Fred Tatasciore and Adam Croasdell, although for those who want to really stick to the anime feel, hopefully you'll be able to switch to Japanese voices as well.

It will be released digitally on April 24, 2018; and on Blu-ray and DVD on May 8, 2018.

Batman and a mix of well-known Gotham City residents are snatched from their original playing grounds by Gorilla Grodd's time displacement machine. The comics costumes get a Japanese makeover as the villains take over the forms of feudal lords ruling the divided land, led by The Joker himself. Batman needs to use his intellect and his allies to bring peace to the land, including working with Catwoman and Robin and the rest of the "Bat-Family". With that, it's kind of unusual that its taken until 2018 for somebody to go "Hey, why don't we, like, really make Batman a ninja, in a full-on Japanese anime and everything?". It will be available in a 4K digital download sometime this summer.

The movie is directed by by Junpei Mizusaki (Zoo "The Poem of Collected Sunlight", JoJo's Bizarre Adventure opening sequence), written by Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann, Terra Formars) and features character designs by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki; produced by Warner Bros. Voicing Batman this time out is Roger Craig Smith, who played the character in the video game Batman: Arkham Origins. "Japan have conjured an impressive addition to the Dark Knight's canon of entertainment, taking Batman and his friends and foes in an altogether new direction", said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. Award-winning screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supah Ninjas, Afro Samurai) adapted the film's script to English.

At the Batman Ninja NYCC panel, Okazaki explained that combining 21st-century Gotham with the Middle Ages of Japan was ideal for him.
