'Call of Duty' film approaches 'Sicario 2' director

That Call of Duty movie is moving closer to actually happening, despite the fact that Hollywood has still yet to churn out a genuinely good video game adaptation.

Sources told Hollywood news site Variety that Sicario 2: Soldado director Stefano Sollima is now in talks to direct the untitled Call of Duty movie.

At this point, I'm wondering how the Call of Duty films will be any different from any other action-packed war movie, especially when Sher and Van Dyk keep stressing the fact that the cinematic universe will be wholly original and will not borrow any plotlines or characters from the video game franchise.

It feels like this is Activision wanting to make more money from gamers past the yearly release of Call of Duty, because DLC and pulling $1 billion in game sales alone (nothing else Call of Duty related) isn't enough. That seems like a tall order. It was penned by Kieran Fitzgerald, the screenplay writer of Snowden who is also now scripting a second Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes sequel. Kieran Fitzgerald wrote the script and will develop the film with Sollima.

'We have plotted out many years, ' Sher told the Guardian last year. "We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going". However, no representative from Activision Blizzard Studios will confirm that the studio is in negotiations with the director at this time.

Or do you think they could pull it off and turn the Call of Duty franchise into a cinematic universe?

She added: 'The Modern Warfare series looks at what it's like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you.

Sollima just finished up with Sicario 2: Soldado, the crime-thriller sequel to the original 2015 movie that will see Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and Alejandro Gillick (Benicio Del Toro) return to take down drug cartels from smuggling terrorists across the United States border. It's a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope ... a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie'.
