After an emphatic 73-run victory over South Africa, Team India leapfrogged the Proteas to claim the number one spot in the ICC ODI Team Rankings on Wednesday.

No Indian men's side since its first tour in South Africa back in 1992, has ever won a series across any format.

Shreyas Iyer has been showing the elements of an worldwide batsman, but he has failed to strike big as he edged Ngidi to Klaasen behind the wicket just when it seemed that he was building the platform for a late innings flourish.

The century also helped Rohit become the fourth highest century scorer in ODIs for India, following Sachin Tendulkar (49), Virat Kohli (34) and Sourav Ganguly (22).

India got to 274/7 on the back of a Rohit Sharma century in the fifth ODI against South Africa on Tuesday.

David Miller (36) played positively and with Amla solid at the other end, the duo consolidated with a 72-run stand and by the halfway mark, South Africa were placed 119 for three.

Rohit led the tourists, striking his 17th ODI century before chinaman Kuldeep Yadav returned figures of 4/51 to bowl the Proteas out for 201, in their chase of 274.

In this series, still two match is to be played, interestingly it will be a key contest between Indian spinners, and South African batting line-up.

India lost the momentum completely when Ajinkya Rahane (eight) fell victim to Rohit's mistimed call and was ran out by Morne Morkel.

In the end, what was setting up to be a big Rohit hundred turned out to be a gritty innings that seemed just about enough for India. Kris Srikkanth rightly noted that if the numbers of Dhawan and Kohli are taken out, there is very little to show for the other players in the series. Hardik Pandya had possibly his best bowling day in coloured clothing, returning 2 for 30 in nine overs which included the wicket of AB de Villiers, and running out Hashim Amla (71 off 92) with a direct hit. "Nevertheless, it will be a good wicket to play on throughout", Kohli said.

SA came into the game looking to strike early, but the first wicket only came in the eighth over when Kagiso Rabada dismissed one of the dangermen, Shikhar Dhawan, with the total on 48.

For Kohli, this is a significant milestone in his three and half years at the helm as this is also his first series win against a top nation on their soil.

Put in to bat, openers Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan gave India a flying start at the St. Georges Park in Port Elizabeth. I knew I didn't have to change a lot and the runs would come. Under these circumstances, Rohit managed 1 run off 15 balls to begin the innings.
