North Korea: Cracks in US-Japan-South Korea alliance start to show

There was a huge cheer from the crowd at the end of the parade when a unified Korea team entered the arena, with their flag held by Hwang Chung-gum, of North Korea, and Won Yun-jong of South Korea.

Earlier, at a VIP reception before the ceremony, Pence went around a table and shook hands with all the dignitaries except Kim Yong Nam, North Korea's 90-year-old nominal head of state. During the games, they're also accompanied by government minders tasked with security, supervision and translation duties who report suspicious activities back to Pyongyang, Young said.

While preparations for the Pyeongchang Games have involved dialogue and displays of unity between the two Koreas, Abe said he and Moon reiterated that there is a need to continue to press the North over its nuclear weapons and missile development, as agreed between Japan and the United States. Speaking to NBC's "Nightly News" on Thursday, the vice president continued to stress that the USA would protect itself from North Korean nuclear threats by taking whatever "action is necessary to defend our homeland".

The sight of North and South Koreans marching together for the first time in a decade was the culmination of months of work by Seoul.

For about a week, Pence and his press people have been promoting how the VP was going to stand up to the North Korean propaganda machine and deny them their opportunity to "hijack the message and imagery" of the Games, but the political story of the Games so far has been the continued signs of a significant thaw between Pyongyang and South Korea, the staunch USA ally.

Pence had told Seoul in advance that he would be dining with USA athletes soon afterwards "so his seat was not prepared accordingly", the spokesman said.
