NBC Apologizes For Commentator's Japan Remarks At Olympic Opening Ceremony

Sports was forced to issue an apology after an analyst made a boneheaded comment about the host nation live on Friday during the opening ceremonies of the Pyeongchang Olympics. "Joshua Cooper Ramo should not speak for Koreans and obviously doesn't know any Koreans either".

NBC, a unit of Comcast Corp, is the exclusive US broadcaster of the Olympics and is producing more than 2,400 hours of coverage over 18 days from Pyeongchang. This set off a firestorm of criticism from Koreans around the world, many who pointed out that Japan brutally occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945, which led to untold suffering and the country splitting into to two parts.

"Every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural and technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation", Cooper said. How can he make such a historically and culturally insensitive comment? They also criticized the accuracy of giving Japan credit for South Korea's resurgence. Just last month, Mr. Abe's attendance at the Games was in question after tensions escalated over Japan's refusal to reissue an apology for the Japanese military's role in forcing Korean and other women to work in military brothels during World War II.

South Korean Olympic figure skating champion Yuna Kim, right, takes the torch from North Korea's Jong Su Hyon, left, and South Korea's Park Jong-ah during the opening ceremony.

. Petitioners said anyone familiar with Japanese treatment of Koreans during that time would be deeply hurt by Ramo's remark.

In spite of NBC's public apology that was broadcast live, many in South Korea and overseas said the apology was not enough, and Ramo should issue his own apology.
