Leaders from around the world showed up for Friday's Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in PyeongChang, South Korea, including U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

North and South Korea teams entered together under the Korean Unification Flag during the Opening Ceremony.

There is still plenty of tension between the USA and North Korea because the dictatorship nation continues to test nuclear weapons.

"I am very confident, as President (Donald) Trump is, that President Moon will continue to stand strongly with us in our extreme-pressure campaign", Mr Pence told NBC in an interview, maintaining all options were open to deal with the crisis.

The bird figure, part of the Opening Ceremony devoted to explaining South Korean history and culture, came before the national delegations paraded into the stadium. North Korean women's hockey player Hwang Chung-gum and South Korean bobsleigh pilot Won Yun-jong both clutched the flag pole in a noteworthy display of unity. It's the only event that's delayed to air in the U.S. Jo Yong Sam, department director general of North Korea's foreign ministry, said Thursday the country had never "begged the United States for dialogue" and wasn't about to start now.

Spencer O'Brien finishes 22nd in women's slopestyle

Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, and his delegation held a brief meeting with Moon when attending the ceremony, the report said.

Eager to differentiate, provincial authorities have since re-branded the South Korean ski resort as "PyeongChang", using an upper-case "C". But North Korea's record on human rights and the growing threat from its nuclear weapons program appeared out of mind. Thirty years after hosting the Summer Games, the Pyeongchang Olympics has commenced with a hope for peace from everyone around the world. The rhetoric war between North Korea and the Trump administration hasn't skipped a beat in Pyeongchang.

An estimated 35 000 spectators inside the Olympic Stadium were given seat warmers, wind shields, hats and gloves with temperatures as low as -6C during the two hour-long ceremony.

Kim Jong-un hasn't set foot outside North Korea or met a single head of state since he assumed power upon the death of their father, Kim Jong-il, in late 2011.
