However, WhatsApp's support for payments is highly anticipated because of the app's huge popularity among Indian users. It is rolling out gradually to beta testers in the country, meaning that a full release should be coming shortly.

WhatsApp is reportedly testing UPI-based payments to boost digital payments in India and combat Paytm and Hike.

The implementation appears to be very simple and straight-forward. You can then click on Payments, which will then prompt you to link to your UPI. The menu also holds a detailed log of your payment history, including the two parties and the bank involved.

Details about the payments are scarce at the moment, but it seems that, after accepting the terms and conditions of the application, you must verify the phone number and select the bank of preference before you can start using the function.

As of now, the payments option is not directly available to all the users. Now to send money to your contact, tap the attachment button, a grid will open containing gallery, send a contact, share location and Payment options etc.

Please note that UPI will not check the entered mobile number and the bank accounts linked with it. So make sure the mobile phone has the SIM for the same mobile number. Choose the bank with which you have an account and where UPI is activated. Users have been complaining about problems with linking their bank accounts to UPI, which is to be expected considering the beta status of the feature.

Once this is done, you will now need to create a Virtual Payee Address (VPA).

WhatsApp to be considering a UPI-based payments platform since July 2017.

This will work only if sender and recipient are using WhatsApp with money transfer enabled. But if you don't wish to wait that longer, there is a workaround to speed up the process.

Last month, WhatsApp had officially rolled out "WhatsApp Business", a free-to download Android app for small businesses to help them communicate better with their customers and vice-versa in India.
