Twitter and Pornhub ban 'deepfake' face-swap porn videos

Following this announcement Reddit banned several subreddits which have come to be known for circulating pornographic deepfake videos which feature celebrities. The policy calls out anything posted for the "specific objective of faking explicit content or soliciting "lookalike" pornography".

It's an inventive and relatively wholesome twist popularised by those who frequent Deepfakes, a subreddit where people paste famous people's faces onto porn actors by using a machine-learning algorithm. In case of Deepfakes, the software not only swaps the face but also matches the expression. Recently, the tool was utilised to insert Nicolas Cage into any movie. And so has the similar r/CelebFakes, which focuses on non-AI-powered photoshopped pornographic images, but ought to fall under the same rules.

Except it's being culled out of the gate as a number of websites have begun banning deepfakes.

Reddit, which joined Discord, Gfycat, Pornhub and Twitter is banning deepfakes, closed down r/Deepfakes, a subreddit dedicated to fake celebrity videos, and updated its sitewide rules against involuntary pornography and sexual or suggestive content involving minors. The policies, which were previously combined in a single rule, have now been broken down into two different rules.

Reddit strives to be a welcoming, open platform for all by trusting our users to maintain an environment that cultivates genuine conversation.

It's important to note that given that Pornhub is a user-powered platform that allows those with an account on the site to upload content, it will likely be hard to completely wipe deepfake content from the site.

"Content that contains nudity, pornography, or profanity, which a reasonable viewer may not want to be seen accessing in a public or formal setting such as in a workplace should be tagged as NSFW (not safe for work)". It's theoretically possible for deepfakes to be totally consensual, involving performers who know their faces will be swapped - but not particularly likely, at least right now.

Some of the fake porn videos - including ones that used the faces of "Wonder Woman" star Gal Gadot and "Star Wars" actress Daisy Ridley - started being widely shared on social media.

Less than two months later, it's not just a hobby anymore, with some Reddit dwellers offering deepfakes in exchange for bitcoin.

Despite Pornhubs statement, however, Motherboard was reportedly able to still find dozens of deepfakes videos.
