International Olympic Committee declines request to invite 15 Russian athletes, coaches to Olympics

The court declared the athletes to be ineligible for the next edition of the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, starting next week, instead of a life-ban from all Olympic Games. Therefore, the International Olympic Committee will analyse the reasoned decisions very carefully once they are available and consider consequences, including an appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal. Nikitina had been one of the athletes who had her results from Sochi stripped, which would have meant Uhlaender would be in line to move up to bronze and claim her first Olympic medal.

The IOC's executive board also froze contacts with and financial payments to the International Amateur Boxing Association, whose interim president has been named as a leading criminal by the US Treasury Department.

Jim Walden, who represents the Russian in hiding under a witness protection program in the United States, said: "It only emboldens cheaters, makes it harder for clean athletes to win and provides yet another ill-gotten gain for the corrupt Russian doping system".

A year ago the International Olympic Committee (IOC) barred Russian athletes from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics over allegations of state-sponsored doping by Russia in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but will allow some individuals to compete as neutral athletes.

The IOC released a statement supporting the confirmation of doping violations in the 11 athletes, but expressing "regret" that the 28 other athletes were cleared in spite of the evidence in favor of a state-run doping program within Russian Federation.

There has been a positive development for Russia's athletes in the doping saga. "We feel that this decision shows the urgent need for reforms in the internal structure of CAS".

Russian skeleton competitor Elena Nikitina says she wants to compete at the Pyeongchang Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned her doping ban. The overhaul comes after evidence of systematic, state-sponsored doping emerged from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

It said the decision was taken after the panel "unanimously recommended that the IOC not extend an invitation to the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018 to the 15 individuals".

"But I don't think they can do that".

He added he hopes they "focus on sporting competition, and that you know that following you, as usual, are hundreds of thousands, millions, of fans who love you and hope you win".
