United Nations chief warns of increasing threats of weapons of mass destruction


Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev, who was chairing the Security Council meeting, urged North Korea to follow Kazakhstan's path and give up its nuclear ambitions.

"In such a geopolitical context, confidence-building measures that support arms control, non-proliferation and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction are extremely important", he added.

In his address to the Security Council, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that it was in the world's interest that the agreement "be preserved".

President Donald Trump last week waived sanctions on Iran for what the administration said was the final time, meaning lawmakers have 4 months to pass legislation to fix the Obama-era nuclear accord.

Lavrov warned that a failure of a nuclear deal with Iran would indicate a troubling sign.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.

"The (nuclear deal) constitutes a major achievement of nuclear non-proliferation and diplomacy, and has contributed to regional and global peace and security", said Guterres' spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, on Wednesday.

Moscow has no plans to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a session of the UN Security Council on nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, TASS reports.

"The situation on the Korean Peninsula is the most tense and unsafe peace and security challenge in the world today".

He said the issue of North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons "can be resolved by restoring trust among the United States, Russia and China".

According to the spokesman, the report dismisses the United States administration's unilateral and destructive measures regarding the implementation of the nuclear deal, highlighting the worldwide community's confirmation that Iran has been fully committed to the JCPOA.

Haley accused Russian Federation of vetoing three council resolutions and preventing the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from holding Assad's government accountable for the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

He also expressed grave concern at "the growing threat of chemical terrorism in the Middle East, specifically on the territories of Iraq and Syria".
