Toyota Finally Adopts Apple CarPlay

The new Avalon, the flagship of Toyota's portfolio, was unveiled Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. "In addition, drivers will appreciate the standard passive and active safety benefits through Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), as well as athletic handling thanks to its available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), also a Toyota first, that, quite positively, has Avalon out-performing its peers", reads Toyota's press release announcing the CarPlay implementation.

Toyota has confirmed it will finally embrace CarPlay in its 2019 Avalon and other vehicles launching this year. It will require an iPhone to be connected by USB.

Until now, the Japanese automaker had resisted allowing smartphone operating systems access to its infotainment systems, citing security concerns. It's voice controllable too, and compatible with select Android or Apple devices.

Apple's CarPlay platform has been adopted by many major vehicle manufacturers but one of the largest auto makers on the planet held out for as long as it could before finally adopting the platform. Designed and assembled in the USA, the new 2019 Toyota Avalon with be loaded with technology from the interior to the engine bay.

Kia's third-generation Forte will also pack standard CarPlay with a built-in 8-inch screen and optional wireless charging that works iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. Hyundai's 2019 Veloster will include CarPlay standard with a 7-inch display and an optional 8-inch screen and wireless charging available as upgrades.
