Ken Niumatalolo won't take Arizona gig, staying with Navy

Ken Niumatalolo, who had become the top candidate for the Arizona job, will remain at Navy, the Star has confirmed. Niumatalolo has guided Navy to an 84-47 record over his 10 seasons as head coach and bowl appearances in nine of those campaigns.

He led Arizona for a brief time through the recruiting season, since January 2, as the interim head coach. Since the firing of Rich Rodriguez , the Wildcats have been in search for a new coach.

Arizona fired Rich Rodriguez earlier this month in the wake of a sexual harassment allegation the university began investigating in October, and a recent notice of a hostile-workplace lawsuit to be filed against Rodriguez. No offer had been officially made, according to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, but Niumatalolo and Arizona discussed financials and other issues. The Hawaiian native has climbed the ranks at the Navy program starting as a running backs coach, quarterbacks coach, offensive line coach and offensive coordinator before being hired as the head coach in 2007.

Oddly enough, when the first reports surfaced that the Wildcats might go with a triple-option coach, it was met with backlash from a pretty important player on the Arizona roster. The Wildcats were reportedly very far along with Niumatalolo, with Football Scoop reporting that they were negotiating a contract. Two years ago, he had an offer on the table from BYU, but ultimately opted to stay at Navy.
