He tweeted on Friday: "Reason I cancelled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for 'peanuts, ' only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars".

He took to Twitter to say his first trip to Britain since being elected a year ago was off amid claims he feared mass street protests and blamed his predecessor Barack Obama for selling off the former embassy in Grosvenor Square "for peanuts". USA officials surveyed more than 50 sites before zeroing in on the site in Vauxhall, which is south of the river Thames, for the new embassy.

Prime Minister Theresa May's office took issue with Trump's unflattering portrait of the new site as an "off location".

Relations between the USA and its closest ally have been tested repeatedly since Trump took office nearly a year ago.

Some British lawmakers questioned whether would be welcome after he re-tweeted videos from a far-right British group and criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan following a terror attack a year ago.

Londoners "have made it clear that Donald Trump is not welcome here", Khan said. "But maybe Sadiq Khan, Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party planning mass protests, maybe those optics he didn't like the look of".

Last night British officials said the visit was canned for "personal reasons" after a series of perceived slights. In December, Johnson said he was looking forward to welcoming the president. The official, who asked for anonymity to discuss a sensitive diplomatic matter, said Trump's decision reflected his belief that there was nothing to gain by going to Britain now.

While the date of a visit had never been confirmed, speculation suggested the president would formally open the at a ceremony in February.

The investors are now planning to turn the site into a luxury hotel with shops, restaurants and bars.

It followed claims by Michael Wolff, the author of an explosive new book about Mr Trump, that the US President would use a visit to "Trumpalise the Queen and Buckingham Palace". The prince is on friendly terms with Obama, who United Kingdom media have suggested will be invited.

Many politicians in the United Kingdom said the real reason for the cancellation was to avoid the growing number of anti-Trump protests planned for the president's visit.
