Trump to get first presidential physical exam Friday

Dr. Ronny Jackson gave the exam to Trump at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., right before the president departed for a holiday weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla.

He told them that he expects it to go well and that he would be surprised if it did not.

The White House physician pronounced Donald Trump to be in "excellent health" after his first medical exam as US President on Friday, capping off a week in which his mental fitness for the job has come under intense scrutiny.

The physical follows recent speculation surrounding the president's health leading up to the exam.

A smiling President Trump said: "It better go well, otherwise the stock market will not be happy".

In 2015, his personal physician, Dr. Harold Bornstein, declared that if Trump should be elected president, he would be "the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency". Past presidents have received a "fit to serve as president" stamp of approval following the exam.

Jackson, the president's physician for three consecutive administrations, is scheduled to speak with reporters on Tuesday after compiling lab results over the holiday weekend - an unusual step in this annual White House ritual.

Trump himself has pushed back hard against any suggestion that he's mentally unfit, declaring himself "a very stable genius". The results have most often been a general recounting of the president's height, weight, cholesterol levels and the like.

Past presidential physicals mainly paint a portrait of vigor - punctuated by details like workout routines and sports injuries - but Trump isn't known to exercise beyond short walks.

On the plus side, President Trump doesn't smoke and doesn't drink, a decision he says was influenced by his brother Fred.

The president's doctor will no doubt welcome these facts but is likely to be quite concerned about his patient's eating habits.

One anecdote in the book said that Trump's penchant for McDonald's fast food is linked to his "longtime fear of being poisoned".

A Washington Post report published last month said Trump's main diet on the 2016 campaign trail consisted of Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza, and Diet Coke.
