It's not clear what kind of hazardous chemicals leaked from the truck. Wheeles said crews responding to the cleanup faced an "explosion risk".
Harry Maginity with the Indiana Department of Transportation said there was severe damage to the pavement caused by the extreme heat of the fire. Police also called for an evacuation after chemicals that spilled onto the road became volatile. Still, authorities said drivers should expect long traffic delays on the interstate and backups in the surrounding area.
Indiana State Police said all houses within a half mile of the scene are being evacuated.

Update, 9:20 p.m.: Indiana State Police say all lanes of I-65 have reopened in Jackson County after a semi crash and chemical fire had them closed for most of Wednesday.
According to WLKY, both the north and southbound lanes are shut down on I-65 following a crash involving three tractor trailers.
The crash happened on southbound portion of the interstate.
A passenger in Okpeh's vehicle, Senesie Kuyateh, of Jacksonville, FL was injured in the collision and was transported to Scott Memorial Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
