The father of the three-year-old Indian girl found dead in a culvert in Texas, has been charged with capital murder by a grand jury, the Dallas District Attorney said in a statement on Friday. Wesley and wife Sini had adopted her from Bihar and the adoptive father had told the police that she had disappeared after he had reprimanded her for not drinking milk and asked her to stand outside the house near a tree at 3 am. Wesley Mathews later changed his statement to say that she died after choking while he was forcing her to drink milk, following which he was arrested.
A Dallas County grand jury handed down the indictment against Wesley Mathews in the death of his daughter Sherin Mathews on Friday.
Wesley Mathews, 37, was also charged in Dallas County with abandoning a child and tampering with evidence. He is accused of killing Sherin Mathews in October 2017. In his initial story given to investigators after the child vanished, Mathews said that he sent the girl outside as punishment for not drinking her milk, and when he returned about 15 minutes later, the child was gone.
Mathews is being held at the Dallas County jail on a $1 million bond.
An attorney for Wesley Mathews, Rafael de la Garza, did not immediately return a call for comment Firday.
