WCFD Fire Marshal Edwin Baker told KSAT.com that most of the personnel who will provide Ward's escort are the first responders who arrived at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs following the shooting that left 26 dead and 20 injured on Nov 5.

Ryland suffered massive injuries November 5 when a gunman stormed the rural First Baptist Church and slaughtered 26 people, including Ryland's stepmother, Joanne, who tried valiantly to shield her kids. It was deemed the worst mass shooting in Texas history. Ryland lost two of his three sisters and his stepmother, Joann Ward, in the massacre.

Today, Ryland was discharged from the hospital and was treated with a special ride home in a firetruck.

Duncan said he visited the boy throughout his stay at the hospital, where he went through "surgery after surgery", ABC News reported. "I started crying. It's wonderful to be in a small town and we love our children".

"I met with her and talked to her, then I was actually able to go to the hospital and see him for the first time. We just had a connection", Duncan said.

"I was just checking for survivors, and I felt a little tug on my pant leg", Duncan told the San Antonio Express-News. "Of course with my help, but he walked".

ABC News reports that now six-year-old Ryland Ward has miraculously fought to survive after receiving multiple gunshot wounds.

"I was going to buy balloons at H-E-B (grocery store), but they donated them to me", Janie Boren said.

According to University Hospital, Ryland was the facility's final patient from the Sutherland Springs shooting.

"It's just a miracle he survived and is doing as well as he is", she said.

As it rolled down the freeway, supporters gathered on overpasses and along roads waving and smiling, and Ryland waved back.

The Wilson County Fire Department will bring Ward home in one of its fire trucks.
