Ford sued for emissions cheating in diesel trucks

In April of 2017, a U.S. federal judge ordered Volkswagen to pay a $2.8 billion criminal fine for rigging diesel-powered vehicles to cheat on government emissions tests.

Ford is coming under fire for alleged emissions test cheating, with the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks the targets of a lawsuit from a group of owners.

The law firm Hagens Berman claims in its suit that "The trucks' touted performance, power and towing capabilities are only obtained by switching off or turning down emissions controls when the software senses the vehicle is not in an emissions-testing environment". Emissions testing for big trucks like the Ford Super Duty pickups is less stringent than that for passenger cars and SUVs.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, General Motors and Mercedes have all been accused of diesel emissions cheating, although the rash of allegations began with the case against Volkswagen. A defeat device is software created to fool emissions tests by allowing a vehicle to boost its performance, but pollute substantially more in real-world driving.

"These vehicles should more properly been called 'Super Dirty, ' " the petition asserts.

Ford also said that its trucks comply with EPA and California emissions regulations.

Ford is pushing back against the claims.

"Ford vehicles do not have defeat devices", the company said. "We will defend ourselves against these baseless claims".

In a statement Wednesday, Bosch said allegations against the company "remain the subject of investigations and civil litigation" and it takes allegations of diesel software manipulation "very seriously".

The lawsuit brought by Hagens Berman accuses Ford of violations of state consumer laws, false advertising, and racketeering with its diesel-fueled Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks.

According to Hagens Berman law firm, affected pickups which drivers paid $8,400 more than the gasoline edition for higher fuel efficiency, could pollute the air with NOx (nitrogen oxide) at levels up to 50 times of legal limits, Xinhua reported. The auto show's media preview starts Sunday.
