The founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange has been granted Ecuadorian citizenship following five years of stay at the country's Embassy in London.

Assange claims USA authorities have prepared a sealed indictment and intend to extradite him for sedition and espionage after WikiLeaks published hundreds of military and classified documents.

Espinosa said Ecuador had asked the United Kingdom to grant diplomatic status to Assange in a bid to secure immunity and safe passage, but the request was rejected.

"The Government of Ecuador recently requested diplomatic status for Mr. Assange here in the UK". The UK did not grant that request, nor are we in talks with Ecuador on this matter.

Australian-born activist and wanted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, has been granted citizenship by the foreign ministry of Ecuador which says it is offering him another layer of protection.

On Wednesday, Assange posted the photograph of himself in the soccer jersey, and Reuters reported that his name had been recorded in a civil registry of Ecuadorean citizens.

She also said she feared threats to Mr Assange's life coming from third party states. Sweden later dropped the case, but Assange remained ensconced in the embassy because he still faced arrest in Britain for jumping bail. What has changed is Assange's value to Ecuador as a political symbol.

However, Correa was succeeded past year by his former vice president, Lenin Moreno, who has sought to put Ecuador on a more moderate path.

Assange applied for citizenship on September 16th, 2017, and was granted it on December 12th in the same year. Jeff Sessions, the USA's attorney-general, has made it abundantly clear that the book will be hurled, with extreme prejudice, directly at the leaker-in-chief.

Assange, who has received numerous visitors to his modest quarters in the embassy, ranging from Nigel Farage to Lady Gaga, has described the period since his initial arrest as a "terrible injustice".

The biggest crisis came in October 2016, when the embassy cut his Internet service after WikiLeaks published a trove of emails from then-U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The sexual assault allegations also tarnished Assange's reputation.

Correa left office in May after a decade as president.

British authorities have said there is only one way to resolve the issue. After all, Assange is about as diplomatic as Donald Trump.
