United Nations council mulls call for US Jerusalem decision to be withdrawn

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas speaks at a press conference following a summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on last week's U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, on December 13, 2017, in Istanbul.

Although the one-page draft makes no specific mention to Washington, it is seen as a response to President Donald Trump's announcement earlier this month that the U.S. would recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

News agencies are reporting that the UN Security Council on December 18 will vote on a draft resolution rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

The United Nations Security Council is considering a draft resolution that would insist any decisions on the status of Jerusalem have no legal effect and must be rescinded after U.S. President Donald Trump recognised the city as Israel's capital.

Arab foreign ministers agreed to seek a U.N. Security Council resolution on the issue.

Israel has always claimed Jerusalem as its undivided capital, and the city has been the seat of Israeli government since the Jewish state was founded in 1948.

But the one-page draft, which diplomats told Reuters enjoys broad support among the council, comes less than two weeks after Trump announced the us would formally recognize the contested city as Israel's official capital.

For US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, the decision made by Trump is the "just and right thing to do".

The draft resolution will refer to the current United Nations resolutions on the status of Jerusalem and will also call on countries to not to move their embassies to Jerusalem.

The upcoming vote comes on the heels of a declaration by the 57-member Organization for Islamic Cooperation calling Trump's decision "null and void".

US Vice President Mike Pence will visit Jerusalem on Wednesday, wading into the crisis over one of the most controversial issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Earlier, China expressed its support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with a capital in East Jerusalem.

In his address from the White House, Trump said that after repeated failures to achieve peace, a new approach was long overdue.

Several UN resolutions call on Israel to withdraw from territory seized during the 1967 war and have reaffirmed the need to end the occupation of that land.

On Saturday, Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon "strongly condemned" the draft, dismissing it as an attempt by the Palestinians "to reinvent history". "It is Trump who bestowed this award even", said Erdogan, who holds the rotating chairmanship of the OIC.

What's more, the move also threw into jeopardy future peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, which Trump has vowed to broker.

"We do not accept any role of the United States in the political process from now on".
